Amazing scenes at the national stadium where thai players are refusing to continue the match due to a penalty call against them! Currently 1-1.

the reminiscence week.

got a bit of catching up to do... let us start with the last weekend's soccer weekend.

as usual, we played soccer at tanah merah, except this time, wenjie and chuan could not make it (wedding and high fever respectively) so we had only 4 people this time, jermaine, siyuan and kumar and me. it helped that halfway through the day, there was a bust up between 2 of the teams and 2 teams left... leaving 3 teams and us perfectly poised to play every 5 mins.

the night was much more memorable. for the first time, i saw the national stadium full on a non ndp day. it was singapore vs malaysia. and for the first time in my 5 trips there for football there wasn't any space to sit down. so we had to settle for the staircase. they always said there was something special about sg vs my derbies and i agree. the atmosphere was different compared to the previous 4 matches i had attended and with 50,000 people behind them, the Lions played their best so far in this tournament. the kallang roar was subdued for a good 15 minutes after lionel lewis' clanger but credit to sg to fighting back and getting the crowd back onto its feet on the 75 minute. sg could very well have wrapped it up in the 115 min when precious hit a bullet at the my net, but was saved by the fingertips of the malaysian keeper. lionel redeemed himself though, by saving malaysia's last penalty in the shootout and sending a nation into ecstasy. the Lions will play for the last time in the National Stadium this Wednesday against thailand in the first leg of the finals. good luck!

yesterday, i played at the cage for a testimonial match for fuxian, who is going to australia to study in 2 weeks time. the cage is not cheap (90 for an hour for weekends), but it has a nice astroturf and there is music playing in the background (though repetitive) but it was fun playing with the church guys after so long..

in the midweek last week, 6 of the 21ners went to spizza at holland village to celebrate kat's 21th birthday. the time was spent chatting away and reminiscing about the 2 years we spent together in tjc, what happened after and what was happening now. we headed over to wala after dinner to catch a live band playing. charlene ong was there too, and after 2 years of her in australia, she has not changed much (other then slimming down). her sg accent is still there and we suspect that instead of her getting an aussie accent, she must have went over to australia and influenced the folks down under.

as of sib, basically i had 2 meetups in a sense. last friday, i met up with my team at riverside restaurant at clark quay where we had a a good dinner. and the previous week's friday, the entire sib, past, present, future had a meet up at surf and turf at funan centre. in both aspects, we caught up with the people we had not seen in months (for some of us), and had a time chatting about how was sib now, how we had gotten jobs and have finally orded. kudos to roger for helping organise the surf and turf dinner on such a tight budget.

it always good to look back once in a while.

loyalty is dead. long live opportunity.
Monday, January 22, 2007
mused @ 10:35 PM

let us mourn the passing of loyalty, the unyielding knight, in today's modern age. it was a unique character trait, the unswerving faith.

opportunity, the shadow hope, slayed it. while it was not evil, it made the masses realise that sometimes, the two cannot coexist.

one is judged by one's trust and commitment to something or someone, a rare yet precious quality today. the other is a passing chance; somewhat risky but full of hope, if missed, is gone forever.

sometimes, for one thing, one has to sacrificed.

one of the great dilemmas of life.

so which is more important to you now?

watched singapore draw 2-2 indonesia yesterday at the national stadium. in my most honest opinion, singapore didn't deserve the draw yesterday. honestly. but i also don't appreciate indonesia's unsportmanly behaviour. watched the match with janice, thaddeus, siyuan. joses was in the stadium but sitting with his friends. after the match, janice, thad and myself went to simpang for supper. it had been a long time since i had chatted with them and we had a nice long chat.

today in work, i 'smoked' a lot of people again. reminds me of my sib times. assuming a position i am not really in. but still managing to convince people that i know my stuff, which i don't. smoke bomb.

some people think i am getting under paid for what i do here. but i beg to differ. in a sense, it gives me a peek into the exclusive and small world of public relations and media in singapore. i am meeting people (people are giving me name cards that i actually don't really know what to do with them), getting interesting infomation (really exclusive stuff) and seeing the underbelly of the corporate world before i acutally plunge into it in 4 years time. think of it as a 6 month field trip into the dangerous, backstabbing, office politics charged world of work. if i was an admin assistant in an events company, the experience would be completely different; i am pretty sure of that.

yea.

the soccer labyrinth.

mused @ 11:39 AM

i am currently at work. why am i so free? i am waiting for a few calls to come in. so in the mean time, i will just blog a bit.

singapore beat laos 11-0 on monday. it is obviously a fantastic result for singapore football. noh alam shah with 7 goals. however, the opposition IS laos. only tonight, when they play indonesia in a must draw/win game will the lions true colours show. or not.

yesterday i was at taekwondo, i realised my standards are really poor. possibly because of my lengthy layoff aka ns from training. i pale largely in comparison with the black belts who are younger than me. there is also a tinge of politics in the taekwondo field, which i would not comment here. i prefer to take a non intrusive approach to matters that do not concern me.

on saturday, kumar, chuan, wenjie and siyuan (i will from this blog post thereafter refer to them as 'the guys') played soccer at the simpang bedok court again. there were about 5 teams there with a goal cap to win each game. after losing the first match 2-0 (getting my glasses bent to an awkward angle for saving a goal with my face and letting in a horrifying backpass goal), jeremy tan (jermaine tan's brother) joined us. and boy. did he inspire us.

he single handedly helped the team go a 5 game 2-0 streak. his play was almost cheeky, scoring from the halfway line a couple of times right after kickoff. in turn, he inspired the rest of the guys to score at least one goal a piece. there were a group of malays there as well who were intent to put us down after we beat them 2-0 twice in a row. complete spoilsports. the most surprising thing i guess was that a team with 4 people requested me to help them out in goal. if you don't know this by now, i play the keeper in our street soccer team (a non glorious position, yet important by all accounts) kumar likened it to an epl team loaning out their keeper off season to another club. i didn't really do well for them though. left the court with cuts and bruises to my leg, as always. and another sprained thumb, this time my left thumb. so i have 2 sprained thumbs now. cute.

in the afternoon, we caught another movie. this time it was pan's labyrinth, a spanish movie. the story is set in 1940's spain. although the papers rated it as great, i found the movie to be a bad mismash of fantasy and history. not that the acting was bad. it was good on the whole, just that the combination was just a tad strange for me.

in the night, all of us except chuan (who finds watching singapore matches a waste of time), went to the national stadium to watch singapore host vietnam. disappointing match that. to end the day, we caught man u thrashing aston villa 3-1 at simpang.

at least my weekends have some sort of routine to it again. oh well.

i can't drive. for nuts. i beginning to think all cars and people on the road have an agenda with me and want me to fail miserably during my driving test. i especially resent those foreign workers who have no regard for the traffic rules (but i am not racist)

arghh. driving lessons suck.

afterthoughts of st james.

mused @ 10:13 AM

free flow alcohol, free food, music, met and saw people. wat more can i say.

the alcohol last night was free flow till 1100 hours. i had err... one whiskey coke, 1 1/2 whiskey dry, 1 beer, 1 wine and i know my body can't really take alcohol. somehow, i managed to tahan all the way before puking in my front lawn. aye. even through the noxious taxi trip home from st james. my body instinctively gave up after i opened the gate to my house though. and out with the purged alcohol came the food as well.

the food last night was not bad. there was mussels (spicy), seafood noodles (spicy), curry (spicy), yea you get the picture. there were also some fantastic meatballs that disappeared pretty fast.

last night, all the acts from all the rooms in st james were squeezed in powerstation. there was the bellini act, the dragonfly act, the salsa room act. i rather much enjoyed the bellini and the latin music last night. i thought they were pretty good.

i didn't really know anyone there last night. but i am sure i saw one of the specs from apc there last night. i was sitting behind a urban columnist and a fashion rag writer last night and listening to them talk about models for about 1/2 hour. also saw abigail chua (i think thats her name), the one from under one roof. i also somehow managed to have a conversation with my boss' contact from a film coy. we were under a speaker so we were more like screaming. but i started talking to him about films and we managed to get along. but the real highlight of the night for me was meeting electrico and talking to them. i talked to amanda ling (keyboard), david tan (lead vocals) and william lim jr (back up vocals). they said they will be holding a concert in singapore on march the 2nd and they will be releasing a new album at the end of this year. amanda ling and i also had a conversation about how the youth are appreciating local music compared to the older generation whose mindset is that anything local was bad. its really a priviledge for me to talk to them.

tis was an interesting night.

food tasting followed by life at st james powerstation.
mused @ 6:28 PM

i just came back from a food tasting from siam kitchen. we need to cater food for next week's event and siam kitchen kindly let us have a food tasting at their great world city restaurant. and for a bento box style of food, the food is seriously not bad. gotta thank roger for helping me get this, but well he is also helping his own company as well.

tonight, at 7 my colleagues and i will be headed down to st james powerstation for the life! party. never been there before, i wonder what its like. will be an interesting experience all around i guess.

so for this internship is fresh for me, especially since i just left the army. so yes, i am enjoying it.

to st james!

soccer, diamonds, money usher in the new year.
Sunday, January 07, 2007
mused @ 8:50 PM

the first week of 2007 has passed. quite eventfully i must add. last week, i started my internship.

my company specialises in public relations and marketing. however, in a bid to outmanuvere its opponents, it has started a new section. investor relations. investor relations bascially is helping companies garner more attention for their company, so that investors will invest in them.

been helping to plan for a series of investor relations events next week and my head is spilling with infomation which is taking time to digest. still got lots to call, do and manage. the folks here are nice though and i have no complaints..

last saturday (6/1/07), kumar, yc, wenjie and me played soccer again together for the first time in 2 years since our jc times. siyuan also came along and played a bit. it was fun finally playing a short match with random opponents from temasek sec. much like our old tj times where we would go straight to the hockey/netball court after school and convert it to a makeshift street soccer court. we weren't as good as compared to our tj days as we lacked training (we WERE pretty good as a futsal team then ok! of course, i am/was the keeper.) we will be doing this more regularly from now on. miss the old times. we also went to catch blood diamond at tm and i must say, its a good movie to start 07 with. catch it and watch leonardo turn in yet another excellent performance. brilliant.

got lots of plans for the new year. my resolutions i posted to the left of the blog. well, i just hope i can keep to them.

i strangely miss my ns folks, it was fun being around the nsfs in camp and even some regulars. though my new office is somewhat akin to my old office, there is no comparison. miss sib a bit. (i am weird i know)

as i embark on yet another new year, time seems to be slipping away so fast, as always. 21 this year, it has come at an almost frightening pace. i still recall quite a number of more prominent memories when i was younger and when i reflect, it scares me quite a bit.

anyway, steve jobs has announced the iPhone. Looks damn funky. go check it up on the web. would get one (if i win Toto or something, which will never happen, given my families poor luck in lucky draws)

mused @ 8:31 PM

you know on 31 dec 06, i typed out a long blog entry on the year.. unfortunately, my firefox hanged. summary: 2006 = ns, but it was fun due to the people i met.

anyway, welcome to 2007. tommorrow i be starting my internship at a communications company. kind of excited. at least i will be doing something related to my university studies. tha pay obviously is not fantastic, but its the experience that counts.

i will be designing a new blog skin for this blog. not playing dota (due to the trippy internet) gives you time.

happy new year people.
